Senator Bob Menendez and wife, Nadien Mendez, indicted following bribery allegations

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez made headlines after news of his indictment emerged in late September. Sources alleged that the Senator and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, accepted “gold bars and envelopes of cash” from businessman and close friend Wael Hana (Halpert, BBC).

Only five years ago, Wael Hana was victim to failing business deals in New Jersey. Simply put, he had bad luck in business; his attempts to start an Italian restaurant and a limousine service did not come to fruition. That was until his friend began dating U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (Hong et al, NYT).

Sen. Menendez was introduced to Wael Hana by his wife, Nadine. Mr Hana grasped the opportunity to finally start a successful business. He  introduced the Senator to several Egyptian government officials and miraculously ended up earning “sole control over certifying halal food being imported to Egypt” through his company, IS EG Halal (Hong et al, NYT).  It was also this business that allowed Mr. Hana to have the profits to allegedly bribe Sen. Menendez.

It is relevant to recognize that Mr. Hana–who is a Christian – has no previous experience in certifying meat as “halal” under Islamic guidelines.

In the unsealed indictment from this past September, prosecutors claimed that it was

Mr. Hana who aided Sen. Menendez in arranging an agreement to allow for more American aid and weapons to be sent to Egypt. Additionally, the prosecutors are also claiming that Sen. Menendez sent “sensitive information about U.S. embassy employees in Cairo to his wife, who forwarded it to Mr. Hana, who sent it on to an Egyptian government official” (Hong et al, NYT).

As a result of this information, Sen. Menendez and Nadine Menendez were given “hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gold bars, and bribes that included a mortgage payment for Ms. Menendez…a job for her at Mr. Hana’s halal company and a new Mercedes-Benz convertible,” (Hong et al, NYT).

Although both Senator Menendez and his wife deny the charges, this situation highlights the need to hold representatives accountable. The public needs to ensure that those who are elected are conducting business to aid their constituents, and not to sell out government employees and use taxpayer dollars to benefit their own wealth. Government officials must not continue to be allowed to give up information on employees, and aid family or friends in achieving business at the expense of the American public. The case remains to be settled in trial.
